2009 Archaeological Field School at Catawba Nation Ford

Have you ever wanted to participate in an archaeological excavation? This course will give you the opportunity to do just that while earning six hours of college credit, and it also will fulfill one of your requirements for UNC's new Major in Archaeology. UNC's 2009 summer field school will be held at one of six mid-18th century Catawba Indian sites located near Nation Ford in York County, South Carolina (just south of Charlotte). These settlements were inhabited during the French and Indian War, and previous field school excavations at two of these sites have yielded significant evidence about the emergence and endurance of the modern Catawba Nation. Our goal is to learn more about these communities by uncovering artifacts and traces of houses and other features. It promises to be an exciting project.
