Lesson 4.6. Language Families in North Carolina
Social Studies (1996 version, implemented and tested.)
- Grade 4, Goal 1: Anthropology, psychology, sociology -- the learner will analyze the characteristics of the people of North Carolina.
- Objective 2: Describe the origins and characteristics of major groups that settled in North Carolina and assess their influence on North Carolina customs.
- Grade 4, Goal 6: Geography -- the learner will evaluate the significance of the movement of people, goods, and ideas from place to place.
- Objective 1: Trace the movement of people, goods, and ideas from one part of the state to another and between North Carolina and other places.
- Objective 3: Judge the importance of the movement of people, goods, and ideas for North Carolina.
- Grade 8, Goal 1: Impact of geography -- the learner will assess the influence of geography on the economic, social, and political development of North Carolina.
- Objective 4: Trace changes in the movement of people, goods, and ideas at different periods throughout North Carolina history.
- Grade 8, Goal 2: Impact of exploration -- the learner will evaluate the effects of early contacts between various European nations and Native Americans.
- Objective 1: Identify Native American cultures and evaluate their contributions to North Carolina culture.

- Grade 4, Goal 2: Spatial sense, measurement, and geometry -- the learner will demonstrate an understanding and use of the properties and relationships in geometry, and standard units of metric and customary measurement.
- Objective 9: Use models to develop the relationship between the total number of square units contained in a rectangle and the length and width of the figure.
- Objective 10: Measure the perimeter of rectangles and triangles Determine the area of rectangles and squares using grids; find areas of other regular and irregular figures using grids.
- Grade 8, Goal 2: Spatial sense, measurement, and geometry -- the learner will demonstrate an understanding and use of the properties and relationships in geometry, and standard units of metric and customary measurement.
- Objective 2: Calculate distances and areas from scale drawings and maps.
