Teacher Workshops: Schedule


Archaeology and North Carolina’s First Peoples
Online Course: Begins July 7, 2009
$25 (includes classroom materials); 6 CEU

This eight-unit online course explores the science of archaeology and 12,000 years of North Carolina’s human past. Participants will learn some fundamental concepts of archaeology and apply them to learn about five major periods in North Carolina’s history: Paleoindian, Archaic, Woodland, Mississippian/Late Woodland, and Historic. After completing the course, teachers will have a better understanding of North Carolina’s human history and feel comfortable using and adapting lessons and inquiry-based activities in Intrigue of the Past and History from Things kits.

Archaeology and North Carolina’s First Peoples is open to formal and informal educators working with students of all grade levels and subjects. Participants will receive up to 6.0 units of license renewal credit upon completing the workshop.

Intrigue of the Past: An Introduction to North Carolina’s Project Archaeology Curriculum: Chapel Hill, NC; October 17, 2009; 11:30AM-2:30PM
FREE (includes lunch and Intrigue of the Past activity guide); optional assignment for 1.0 CEU

This free workshop will introduce North Carolina’s Intrigue of the Past curriculum and other educational resources available through the Research Laboratories of Archaeology. Teachers who use two or more lessons in their classrooms and provide written feedback within three months will be eligible for 1.0 license renewal credits. This workshop is most appropriate for teachers of students in grades 4–8, and space is limited to 20 participants.
